The Powerful, Magical, Beautiful Stone

I remember, as a young girl, my fascination with turquoise. Always wanting to wear my mother's turquoise and sneaking into her dresser wearing her pieces when she didn't know..this was the era when turquoise was referred to as something "your grandmother would wear."

Boy, have things changed! Holding my father's hand when we went to downtown Tucson to visit the Thunderbird shop. This is when I first met Frank Patania Jr. My father would have a unique and special piece made for mother every year whether it be Christmas or a birthday, a bracelet, a ring, or a wonderful necklace it would be my introduction to this magical stone called turquoise.

As I learn more about this incredible stone and why I've drawn to it for my entire life it began to make sense. 

In many cultures, turquoise is considered a symbol of protection, bringing good fortune and warding off evil spirits. The Native Americans believed turquoise brought courage to the warriors, hunters, and tribal members. Southwest Native American tribes have been using turquoise in religious ceremonies, trade, art, and jewelry for over 2000 years. 

For the Apaches, it was used for protection during battles. You will see turquoise stones inlaid in headstalls for horses. They attached pieces of turquoise to their bows to become precise and invincible hunters and warriors. 

The Hopi miners carried turquoise to give them security and strength in their work. 

Zuni Sunburst Bracelet

The Zuni associated turquoise with the earthly elements. Their designs are characterized by small stoned clusterwork, needlepoint, petit point and inlay. Their work demonstrating precise detail in all of their pieces.

The Navajos, like many other cultures, also associated the different blue-green shades of turquoise with the sky, water and earth. This of course, has transcended into their incredible abilities to create such beautiful artistic pieces beginning in the early 19th century.

Turquoise holds spiritual significance with the Bible even beyond it's beauty. It represents healing, protection and a spiritual connection.

Turquoise is mentioned several times throughout the Bible with references from the time of Moses. The breastplates were adorned with precious stones including turquoise.

Overall, the spiritual meaning of turquoise in the Bible is multifaceted and deeply

connected to our relationship with the divine. By embracing the symbolism of turquoise, we can enhance our spiritual journey and strengthen our connection with God.

This is just the beginning of my journey to understand this powerful, magical, beautiful stone dug from the earth. My hope is that you will find that magical piece that calls to you from our wonderful collections.
